SOLAR PANELS

MAINTENANCE AND CARE

Solar panels have no moving components, meaning there is minimal ongoing maintenance requirements. After covering the initial installation expenses, additional costs for upkeep will be minimal.

Nonetheless, Solar PV systems demand occasional maintenance to sustain their efficient sunlight absorption.

Regular inspections, ideally a few times a year, are vital to check for accumulated dirt, debris, or other materials obstructing the panel surfaces.

KEEPING SOLAR PANELS CLEAN

In general, solar panels are designed to be self-cleaning. They are coated with a hydrophobic layer that prevents water droplets from adhering to the surface. Instead, water carries away dirt and debris as it runs off helping to keep the panels clean. This natural cleaning process ensures that any excess dirt on the panels is washed away.

However, in some cases, such as prolonged dry periods, minimal rainfall, residing in dusty or sandy areas, or dealing with bird droppings buildup, you may need to consider

routine cleaning. A standard garden hose can suffice. Perform this task either in the morning or evening to avoid damaging the panels with cold water when they're hot.

In extreme cases of dirt or debris you may need consider hiring a local specialist cleaning company equipped to perform the task effectively.

IDENTIFYING WHEN CLEANING OR INSPECTION IS NEEDED

Also, keep an eye on nearby trees to ensure they don't cast shadows on your system.

Recognising the right time for cleaning and inspecting your solar panels is essential for maintaining their efficiency. Several signs can indicate the need for attention.

First and foremost, a noticeable drop in energy production should raise a red flag. If you find that your solar panels are generating less electricity than usual, it might be time to investigate.

Additionally, keep an eye out for a layer of dirt, dust, or debris accumulating on the panel surface, especially after extended periods without rain. Bird droppings or leaves can also obstruct sunlight absorption.

Finally, if you notice any physical damage, such as cracks or scratches on the panels, immediate inspection and potential repairs are crucial to ensure the longevity of your solar system.

Monitoring your system's electricity generation alongside weather conditions helps you anticipate issues and potential malfunctions. By staying vigilant and addressing these signs promptly, you can maximise the performance and lifespan of your solar panels.
